Lost in the mountains in Auvergne, France, Le Montagnard is situated in the small town of Murol and proposes typical local food and products. In this restaurant decorated on the theme of mountains, you will have the opportunity to taste crêpes, salty or sweet, or even typical and authentic “auvergnats” dishes. If you’re not hungry maybe you should go to another place! However if you are I think you came to the right place. Indeed, a large selection of richly filled crêpes from 8.50€ to 12€ is available; your only problem now will be to pick one. Moreover, meat lovers will be happy too to know that what is prepared comes directly from the butcher's shop across the street who buys his products from local producers near Murol. If sunny, you can enjoy the terrace as well and have lunch or dinner with the relaxing sound of the river. Also enjoy the mezzanine, from where you have a stunning view point on the castle of Murol. During summer, it is recommended to book and the service can sometimes be long but it is worth it. In fact, the atmosphere is friendly and the boss does not hesitate to go around the room several times during the service, to ask everyone about their thoughts or to make a joke on occasion.
I decided to have a starter which is called “Planche à partager” which is meant to be shared usually but you can also have it on your own. This plate, whose size and price change according to the amount you asked, includes an assortment of several different French and Auvergne cheeses such as Cantal, Bleu d'Auvergne and Saint Nectaire as well as a homemade terrine called Pountie (pork, spinach and prunes). It is an explosion of flavours which can only be found only in Auvergne and allows you to prepare for the rest of the meal. In main course I decided to taste their typical and so famous Truffade and I was not disappointed. Indeed, for 13.90€ this dish made with potatoes and Cantal tomme was served with a green salad, and charcuterie: rosette and country ham.

The portions are neither too big nor too small, enough to satisfy the biggest eaters. For 8.90€ you can also order this dish in kids version, which provides smaller portions for children, not bad to avoid waste, regarding food but also money! The waiting time is not extremely long, but you will probably have to wait a little more than in other restaurants because if the know-how is transmitted from generation to generation in this family the excellent quality of its dishes is mainly due to the patience and the time given to each plate. For those who are fond of good food, you can ask for more or take a dessert. The red fruit ice cream that we have been offered is homemade which adds quality to this local cuisine and the price varies between 2 and 5 € depending on the quantity you take. Plus, it is really delicious. Finally, I was able to eat copiously, for less than 25 € and had a very good moment.
An address we highly recommend.
